How to Obtain Early Refill of Fentanyl Patches That Keep Coming Off

Fentanyl is an opioid pain reliever that is available by prescription only. It is available only as a transdermal patch and is used for chronic pain that requires continuous opioid treatment, and cannot be managed in any other way. If the patches do not adequately stick to your skin, you may attempt to exchange them at your pharmacy.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the instructions on the package to ensure that you are applying and using the Fentanyl patches properly. Do not apply the patches to wet skin and avoid getting the patch wet while you are wearing it.

    • 2

Try to tape the edges of the patch to your skin if the edges are the only portion of the patch that is not sticking to your skin. Use first aid tape that is designed to adhere to skin. If the patches continue to come off, proceed to Step 3.

    • 3

Go to the pharmacy where you originally filled your Fentanyl prescription. Bring your pharmacy receipt and all unused patches.

    • 4

Tell the pharmacist that your Fentanyl patches are defective since they are not adequately sticking to your skin and ask to exchange the remaining patches.
