Lyrica is prescribed to reduce nerve pain and improve mobility in patients with fibromyalgia. Other uses include treating epileptic seizures, diabetic nerve pain and the pain that accompanies shingles.

Lyrica is a structural derivative of the neurotransmitter GABA, according to rxlist.com. It is thought to work by reducing excessive electrical signals caused by dysfunctional nerves, thereby reducing fibromyalgia pain.
