What Are the Causes of Abdominal Pain in Women?

Abdominal pain in women may be caused by infections, injuries or disorders. One common cause of female abdominal pain is uterine fibroids. Other possible causes include pelvic inflammatory disease, endometrosis, ectopic pregnancy and menstrual cramps.
  1. Uterine Fibroids

    • Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths, which may be found during a woman's childbearing years. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, heavy menstrual cycles and lower back pain.

    Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

    • Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection in the female organs such as the cervix and fallopian tubes. Symptoms may include lower abdominal pain, moderate fever and chills, so immediate medical attention is needed.

    Ectopic Pregnancy

    • Ectopic pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus, including the fallopian tubes. Signs and symptoms may include a missed menstrual cycle, light bleeding and pain.

    Endometriosis

    • Endometriosis involves menstrual tissue attaching and growing on the female organs, including the fallopian tubes. Symptoms may include heavy bleeding, painful bowel movements and radiating lower back pain.

    Menstrual Cramps

    • Menstrual cramps may occur during a woman's monthly flow. Symptoms may include dull pain, dizziness and nausea, which may last for the full menstrual cycle.
