Menstrual Cycle Symptoms

A menstrual cycle, or a period, is the process by which a female's body prepares for pregnancy every month. This process involves the fluctuation of hormone levels, which can cause numerous emotional and physical symptoms.
  1. Bleeding

    • The most common menstrual cycle symptom is bleeding from the vagina. Menstrual blood is a mixture of blood and uterine lining.

    Cramps

    • Menstrual cramps are generally caused by prostaglandins, which are chemicals the body produces to make the smooth uterine muscles contract. Menstrual cramps typically last only a few days.

    Bloating

    • Another common menstrual cycle symptom is bloating. Water retention can cause swelling in the abdomen and the extremities.

    Food Cravings

    • Many females have increased appetites and specific food cravings during and just before their menstrual cycles. Common cravings include chocolate, salt and sugary foods.

    Mood Swings

    • Females commonly suffer from mood swings before and during their menstrual cycles. While some females become depressed and go on crying jags, others become irritable and prone to angry outbursts.

    PMS

    • PMS, or premenstrual syndrome, involves more severe menstrual cycle symptoms that appear about a week before a female starts her period. PMS symptoms can include backaches, constipation or diarrhea, confusion, clumsiness and difficulty concentrating.
