Can blood for transfusion put in refrigerator?
Blood for transfusion cannot be put in a refrigerator because the cold temperature can damage the red blood cells. Red blood cells are very fragile and can be easily damaged by temperature changes. When blood is cooled below 4 degrees Celsius, the red blood cells start to break down and release their hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. If the hemoglobin is released, it can cause serious complications for the person receiving the blood transfusion.
In addition, cold temperatures can also cause the blood to clot. This is because the cold temperature can activate the clotting factors in the blood. If the blood clots, it cannot be used for transfusion. Therefore, blood for transfusion must be stored at a temperature between 2 and 6 degrees Celsius. This temperature is high enough to prevent the red blood cells from breaking down, but low enough to prevent the blood from clotting.
