Signs & Symptoms of Salmonella Consumption

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause illness in people, such as gastroenteritis and even typhoid fever. Salmonella bacteria can be contracted through eggs, poultry, meat, water and unprocessed milk. Approximately 50,000 cases of salmonella infections are recorded each year in the United States. You can prevent salmonella infections by cooking food thoroughly and washing your hands.
  1. Nausea and Vomiting

    • Salmonella infections often cause nausea and vomiting. These symptoms may occur from a few hours to two days after contracting the bacteria.

    Diarrhea

    • Diarrhea can be caused by salmonella infections and may result in blood in the stool or constipation. In some cases, diarrhea can lead to dangerous dehydration.

    Fever and Chills

    • Fever and chills often occur as a result of a salmonella infection. If a fever is above 102 degrees F., it may signal typhoid fever. Typhoid fever often involves fevers of 103 degrees F. or higher. Rose spots---raised, pinkish spots that do not itch---on your chest may indicate typhoid fever.
