Signs & Symptoms of Vitamin D Toxicity

Vitamin D is necessary for humans to be healthy, but too much can cause toxicity. The Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research advises that following guidelines for vitamin supplements, and eating a well-rounded diet, keep Vitamin D below the toxic levels.
  1. Causes

    • Vitamin D toxicity will only occur from excessive amounts Vitamin D. This typically occurs from an overuse of supplements. It is unlikely for someone get enough Vitamin D from diet alone to cause toxicity. (See References 1)

    Symptoms

    • The symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity are caused by hypercalcemia, an excess of calcium. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and anorexia. These symptoms are followed by nervousness, weakness and then renal failure. (See References 1)

    Misdiagnosis

    • Vitamin D toxicity is often given as a wrong diagnosis. In these cases, the patient actually has a vitamin D hypersensitivity syndrome, because of primary hyperparathyroidism. (See References 2)

    Prevention

    • To prevent Vitamin D toxicity take only the daily recommended dosage, typically 5 to 15 mcg. (See Resources 1) Excessive amounts can build up over time and lead to dangerous levels.

    Treatment

    • The treatment for Vitamin D toxicity is to restrict the intake of calcium, fluid hydration and medication. Any use of Vitamin D supplements will be stopped. For severe cases hospitalization will be required. (See References 1)
