How to Treat Ricin Poisoning
Ricin, a byproduct of castor beans, is a toxic plant protein for which there is no antidote. Accidental exposure to ricin is rare. Terrorism or other criminal activity is the main source of ricin poisoning. Treat ricin poisoning with symptom relief since there is no known cure. Contact local health officials and emergency responders if you suspect a ricin release. Ricin can be placed in food or water. Aerosol release is possible. Death can result from exposure to a small amount of ricin. Treat ricin poisoning as a serious health emergency and seek medical and emergency assistance.

Wear protective clothing and respiratory ventilators when treating those poisoned by ricin.

Evacuate if ricin is present and begin decontamination procedures immediately. Remove your clothing. Cut off clothing rather than pulling it over your head. Wash your skin with soap and water.

Use rubber gloves to cover your hands and gather your clothing. Place contaminated clothing in a plastic bag and seal it. Tell health officials the location of contaminated clothing.

Seek immediate medical attention if you consume or breathe in ricin. Tell medical personnel you suspect ricin poisoning. Avoid fluids and do not induce vomiting.

Rinse eyes with water for 10 to 15 minutes if you suspect ricin exposure. Remove contacts and dispose of them. Wash glasses with soap and water before putting them back on.

Expect supportive care at the hospital. Intravenous fluids, oxygen, seizure medication and pumping the stomach are all possible treatments to treat ricin poisoning.
