How to Treat Cyanide Poisoning

Cyanide is a dangerous chemical that quickly deprives the body of oxygen and harms major organs. Accidental exposure to cyanide, which is used in various industries and available as a solid, liquid or gas, can lead to cyanide poisoning. Learn how to properly treat cyanide poisoning to avoid serious risks to your health.

Instructions

    • 1

Know the symptoms of cyanide poisoning. Excessive perspiration, dizziness, altered breathing, pinkish skin hue and nausea are early indicators of cyanide poisoning. If left untreated, cyanide poisoning can lead to coma, cardiac distress and death.

    • 2

Cyanide poisoning often creates an almond scent in the air. If you observe this scent coupled with any of the symptoms mentioned, cyanide poisoning is the likely culprit.

    • 3

Treat cyanide poisoning immediately as the effects of the poisoning occur rapidly without treatment. Move the victim into fresh air and remove all articles of clothing. Wash the victim with soapy water and call 911 immediately.

    • 4

Assess the severity of the cyanide poisoning to determine the best course of treatment. If mild symptoms are present, administer 100 percent oxygen to the victim and contact emergency medical personnel.

    • 5

If the cyanide poisoning victim is unconscious, give 100 percent oxygen and then an antidote. The Cyanide Antidote Kit contains amyl nitrite, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate, each used in order to achieve stability in the victim. The FDA-approved Cyanokit is an antidote that contains hydroxocobalamin, an intravenous drug.
