How to Change Color Air-Flow Indicators
Color indicator tubes are sealed glass tubes used to test air that may be contaminated with colorless or odorless gases. The tubes contain chemicals that react with such compounds as toluene, moisture or carbon monoxide -- among other things -- to form a color or stain inside the tube. The tubes work in tandem with a small hand-held device similar to a bellows that is pumped several times to expose the air to the chemicals inside the tube.Things You'll Need

1
Hold the tube between your index finger and your thumb similar to how you would hold a pencil.
-
2
Insert the end of the tube into the end of the pump that is clearly marked for tube insertion. The tube is designed so that you can break the small nipple at the end of the tube.
-
3
Scrape the end of the tube against the bottom of the cutter insert to scratch it slightly. Finish breaking it by bending it back until it breaks off a small portion of the tip. Do both ends of the tube.
-
4
Insert the end of the tube into the air pump inlet. The arrow on the tube should point toward the pump. The air inlet is on the left side on the front of the pump. Push the tube in until it stops. It should fit snugly.
-
5
Grasp the pump with your hand and pump the bellows to pull air through the tube to check air quality. Take the required number of strokes according to the instructions on your pump. Refer to the color of the tube and any charts or manufacturer's directions to confirm air contaminates.
