Symptoms of Exposure to Liquid and Aerosol

Exposure of your skin to freon 22 liquid or aerosol can cause frostbite and a burning sensation. Prolonged exposure can lead to skin dryness, cracking, itching, rash and redness. Freon 22 vapors or aerosol can cause eye irritation, including tearing, pain, swelling and blurred vision. Accidentally swallowing freon 22 can result in an upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Symptoms of Exposure to Vapor

Breathing freon 22 vapor is harmful and even lethal if you're exposed for long periods of time. Immediate symptoms of overexposure by inhalation include irritation of the nose, throat and airways, and central nervous system depression with dizziness, incoordination, headache and confusion. More serious complications include heart irregularities, fainting, unconsciousness and eventually death. Freon 22 vapors are heavier than air, so can cause suffocation if you are trapped in an enclosed and/or low place.
First Aid

Immediately move to fresh air if you are exposed to freon 22 vapors. In case of skin contact, immediately wash the area with soap and warm water, but avoid hot water. In case of eye contact, flush your eyes with water for 15 minutes while keeping your eyelids open. Seek medical attention especially if you have an underlying central nervous system or cardiovascular condition.
Cleaning Procedure

If you spill freon 22, clean the area using protective equipment. First prevent run-off to water sources like sewer, stream or river. If this happens, notify officials by calling 911. Clean large amounts of liquids by pumping and the remaining liquid with an absorbent material like sand or clay. Open all windows and doors to ventilate the area well.
