Ciprofloxacin HCl Uses
Ciprofloxin HCl treats and prevents bacterial infections. It's also known by the brand names CIPRO and CIPRO XR from Bayer and ProQuin and ProQuin XRby Depromed.The XR designates the medicine as extended release, and CIPRO XR contains ciprofloxin betaine as well. It is an oral medication available in tablets and liquid.This antibiotic is in the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics. Fluoroquinolone drugs increase the possibility of tendinitis and ruptured tendons.-
Urinary Tract Infections

The urinary tract comprises the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Bladder infections are known as cystitis, and kidney infections are called pyelonephritis Urinary tract infections are characterized by increased urination and a burning sensation while urinating. Ciprofloxin HCl is most effective against urinary tract infections caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli, better known as E. coli. It is also prescribed to prevent infections after urinary tract surgery.
Anthrax

Bacillus anthracis causes anthrax. This highly contagious disease spreads through physical contact, inhaling or eating food contaminated with the bacteria. Topical anthrax causes blisters and ulcerations. Inhaled anthrax causes respiratory difficulties, and ingested anthrax results in digestive distress and bleeding. Anthrax can be fatal. Ciprofloxin HCl can be used as a preventive drug against anthrax and before it shows up on any diagnostic tests. It can also treat anthrax after formal diagnosis.
Cat Scratch Disease

Bartonella henselae causes cat scratch disease, also known as cat scratch fever. Cats get the bacteria from fleas and pass it on to humans. Unlike its name, a scratch from a cat is not necessary; bartonella can live on the skin and fur of cats and be transmitted through licking and petting. Cats that have bartonella do not catch the disease. Usually mild, patients develop swollen lymph nodes and a fever. Ciprofloxin HCl isn't prescribed unless the lymph nodes' swelling and fever don't go away after a few days or if additional symptoms develop.
Typhoid Fever

Ciprofloxin HCl is effective against typhoid fever, also known as enteric fever, caused by salmonella typhi. Typhoid fever causes an extremely high fever, 103 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Without treatment this fever can continue for weeks and possibly months. Typhoid fever may also cause stomach distress and a bodywide rash. Ciprofloxin HCl is one of the three antibiotics of choice for treating typhoid fever, the other two being ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
