Antara Alternatives
Antara, known generically as fenofibrate, is part of a class of drugs known as fibrates. It helps lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. Antara is an effective cholesterol medication, but it isn't safe for everyone. People with liver, kidney or gallbladder problems usually cannot take Antara and must use alternative medications.-
Lipitor

Lipitor is a cholesterol medicine in the statin class. Lipitor may be a good alternative for people who can't take Antara due to gallbladder problems. Known generically as atorvastatin, Lipitor limits the amount of cholesterol the liver can make. It doesn't have many side effects, but can cause liver and muscular problems. For this reason, people with liver disease or kidney disease are usually advised against taking this particular cholesterol medication.
Colestid

Colestid, a cholesterol medication known as a bile acid sequestrant, reduces the amount of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream. People who can't take Antara due to kidney problems usually do well on Colestid. Colestid is available in granule form and is dissolved in water. It is not recommended for people with intestinal blockages or liver or gallbladder problems. Common side effects are heartburn, diarrhea and rectal irritation. Rarely, people experience bloody stools or severe abdominal discomfort and pain.
Zetia

Zetia is the only cholesterol absorption inhibitor type of cholesterol medication. It prevents the gastrointestinal tract from absorbing bad cholesterol. It is sometimes given to people with liver problems who cannot take other types of cholesterol medications. Flu-like symptoms, dizziness, headaches and joint pain are commonly experienced symptoms. Less common but more serious symptoms include severe stomach pain, facial swelling, jaundice and prolonged or spontaneous bleeding. Zetia is sometimes contraindicated in people who are also taking blood thinners.
Lovaza

Lovaza is a prescription version of omega-3 fatty acids. It's sometimes the only way for pregnant women, who typically can't take other kinds of cholesterol medications, to control their cholesterol. Lovaza is made from fish oil, so people with fish or seafood allergies can't take it. Lovaza is a relatively safe cholesterol medication but does have a few side effects. Heartburn, nausea, rash and back pain have all been reported.
