Effexor Indications

Effexor is the brand name for the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor venlafaxine made by Pfizer. Though venlafaxine's primary use is for major depression in adults, it is also FDA-approved to treat generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. The drug also has off-label or investigational uses such as for obsessive-compulsive disorder, hot flashes, neuropathic pain, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. The only contraindication to use of venlafaxine is high blood pressure. Possible side effects of venlafaxine include nausea, nervousness, sweating and high blood pressure.
  1. Major Depression

    • A key use for Effexor or venlafaxine is for major depression. Major depression is characterized by depressed mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyable activities in addition to at least five of the following symptoms for two weeks: significant weight loss or weight gain or major change in appetite, difficulty sleeping or excessive sleeping, agitated or depressed movements, fatigue or less of energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, decreased concentration and suicidal thoughts. The recommended dose of venlafaxine for treatment of major depression ranges from 37.5 to 75 mg two to three times per day of the immediate-release tabs and 75 to 225 mg daily of the extended-release tablets.

    Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

    • GAD, which is another indication for the use of venlafaxine, is characterized by excessive anxiety or worry that is difficult to control for at least six months. This anxiety is associated with three or more of the following symptoms: restlessness, being easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and sleep problems. The recommended dose of venlafaxine for treatment of GAD ranges from 75 to 225 mg daily of the extended-release tablets.

    Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

    • SAD is a third use for venlafaxine. The primary feature of this disorder is significant fear of one or more social or performance situations that exposes the individual to unfamiliar people or situations. The recommended dose of venlafaxine for treatment of SAD is 75 mg of the extended-release tablets daily.

    Panic Disorder (PD)

    • The last FDA approved use for venlafaxine is for PD. This disorder is characterized by recurrent and unexpected panic attacks and excessive concern about these attacks up to one month following the attack. The recommended dose of venlafaxine for treatment of PD is the same as for GAD -- 75 to 225 mg daily of the extended-release tablets.
