Why does a doctor not prescribe antibiotics if you have mumps?

Mumps is a viral infection, and antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections. Antibiotics will not help to treat mumps and may actually make the infection worse by killing off the good bacteria that help to fight off the virus.
