Why is acetaminophen ok to take before surgery?
Acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol) is not generally recommended to be taken before surgery. It can prolong bleeding and increase the risk of bleeding complications during and after surgery. Therefore, it is usually advised to avoid taking acetaminophen for a certain period before surgery, as directed by the doctor. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen and naproxen should also be avoided before surgery for similar reasons. Instead, doctors may recommend alternative pain relievers such as opioids, local anesthetics, or other medications that do not have the same effect on blood clotting.
