How to Install Elmiron

If you suffer from interstitial cystitis (Painful Bladder Syndrome), the pain can be hard to tolerate, and it may seem as though nothing short of strong painkillers can relieve the pain. Elmiron is a brand name for pentosan polysulfate sodium capsules. The process of taking Elmiron is often referred to as an installation, and it's a simple process, somewhat similar to taking antibiotics or other medications. Elmiron isn't a pain medication, but it can be used to relieve the discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis.

Instructions

    • 1

Before you take Elmiron, tell your doctor if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder or a history of liver disease, strokes, aneurysms, stomach ulcers, intestinal polyps or diverticulitis. Elmiron essentially works like a blood thinner and as a result could produce a negative reaction if you have a history of any of these conditions.

    • 2

Tell your doctor if you are taking any medications that may cause a reaction with Elmiron. These include blood thinners and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking any medications for blood clotting. Avoid any anti-coagulant therapy such as warfarin sodium or heparin while you're taking Elmiron.

    • 3

Swallow one Elmiron tablet three times a day, or as directed on your prescription. You should take the pills on an empty stomach, usually an hour before eating or two hours after eating. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, but skip the pill altogether if it is close to the time of your next dose. If you are in doubt, contact your doctor or pharmacist, or follow the instructions on your prescription. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and the length of time you should continue to take Elmiron.

    • 4

Visit your doctor every three months while you're taking Elmiron. Your doctor may need to adjust the dosage and perform blood tests to ensure that the medication isn't causing negative side effects.

    • 5

Contact your doctor if you experience side effects. Common side effects include hair loss, dizziness, blood in the stool, nausea and rash. If you find blood in your stool, contact your doctor as soon as possible. There are other possible side effects, and you should contact your doctor if they become bothersome. Elmiron doesn't work for everyone. If you are experiencing hair loss, your doctor may be able to suggest an alternative treatment.
