Metronidazole Cream Uses

Metronidazole refers to an antibiotic that kills bacteria in your body. Metronidazole is available in oral and topical forms. Doctors prescribe metronidazole gels and creams to manage the symptoms of acne rosacea and to treat bacterial vaginal infections. However, metronidazole will not eliminate vaginal yeast infections. Brands of topical metronidazole include MetroCream, MetroGel, MetroGel-Vaginal, MetroLotion and Noritate.
  1. Treating Acne Rosacea

    • Doctors sometimes prescribe metronidazole lotion to reduce the redness and sores associated with acne rosacea. Acne rosacea refers to a chronic skin condition involving redness and skin eruptions. Metronidazole usually improves acne rosacea within three weeks. However, symptoms may return once you stop using the drug. Patients using metronidazole for acne rosacea usually apply the lotion once or twice a day.

    Treating Vaginal Infections

    • Doctors also prescribe metronidazole gel to treat some bacterial vaginal infections. Metronidazole gel comes with an applicator the patient inserts into the vagina. Patients usually take metronidazole gel for five consecutive days. For best results, insert the medication at night and do not get up again, except to wash your hands and the applicator, according to Medline Plus. Do not wear tampons, douche or have sexual intercourse after using metronidazole gel.

    Considerations

    • Do not take metronidazole if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, since the drug is absorbed by the placenta and excreted in breast milk. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using metronidazole cream or gel. Metronidazole cream may cause skin dryness, burning, redness or stinging. It may also increase your sensitivity to sunlight, so wear sunglasses, sunscreen and protective clothing. Do not drink alcohol while using metronidazole gel.
