Tramadol Vs. Oxycodone

Tramadol and oxycodone are prescription drugs used to treat pain. While these two drugs are used to treat similar conditions, they work to treat pain in different ways.

  1. Tramadol

    • Tramadol is in a class of drugs called opiate agonists. According to the National Institutes of Health, Tramadol is a synthetic opiate that works to change how the body feels pain. The drug works to treat moderate to somewhat severe pain for long periods of time and there is a risk of addiction with long term use.

    Oxycodone

    • Oxycodone is in a class of drugs called opiate analgesics. These drugs affect the way the brain and central nervous system react to pain. Oxycodone is used to treat moderate to severe pain over a long period of time and can be habit forming.

    Tramadol Side Effects

    • Tramadol can cause headaches, sleepiness or sleeplessness, dizziness and uncontrollable shaking. In severe cases, Tramadol can cause seizures, hives and hallucinations. This drug should not be taken when driving and alcohol consumption increases the side effects of the medication.

    Oxycodone Side Effects

    • Oxycodone can cause nausea, constipation, lightheadedness and drowsiness. Some severe side effects include accelerated heartbeat, difficulty breathing, hives and a rash. This drug should not be taken while driving and side effects can be increased if taken with alcohol.
