Suboxone Drug Information

Suboxone (marketed by Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare) consists of buprenorphine and naloxone, a combination prescribed to treat addiction to strong opioids. Buprenorphine is a less potent opioid and naloxone blocks the action of stronger opiods.
  1. Forms

    • Suboxone is available in tablet form as well as a packaged film, according to Suboxone.org. Both products are designed to be taken sublingually (dissolved under the tongue). Neither product should be taken by anyone hypersensitive to either buprenorphine or naloxone.

    Adverse Effects

    • Patients can become physically dependent on Suboxone, so it must be taken exactly as prescribed. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, insomnia, pain, sweating and other symptoms of withdrawal.

    Treatment Plan

    • Suboxone should be used as one part of a treatment strategy for opioid addiction, along with counseling. Only physicians qualified under the Drug Addiction Treatment Act should prescribe Suboxone.
