According to Pub Med, a service of the National Institutes of Health, clarithromycin is used for the treatment of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, sinus infections and bronchitis. Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic, which means it works by inhibiting the growth of new bacteria.
Medication Schedule

Clarithromycin comes as a tablet that can be standard or long-acting. An oral liquid form is also available. The standard tablet, as well as the liquid, are generally taken twice a day on a full or empty stomach for one to two weeks. The long-acting tablet is taken for the one to two weeks as well; however, it is typically taken only once a day.

According to WebMd.com, possible side effects of clarithromycin may include diarrhea, upset stomach, headaches or changes in taste. The Mayo Clinic states that clarithromycin should not be used in conjunction with astemizole, pimozide or other antidepressants, as serious cardiac side effects may occur.
