What Is Miconazole Nitrate Cream?
Miconazole nitrate is part of a group of medicines known as antifungals that are used to treat certain types of skin and vaginal infections caused by fungus. The medication comes in a cream formulation, but it is also available in a number of other formulations, including tablets, powders, jellies and sprays. Miconazole nitrate cream is available in prescription and over-the-counter formulations.-
Uses
-
Any number of skin infections may be caused by fungus. Miconazole nitrate cream is commonly used to treat athlete's foot, ringworm, yeast infections and jock itch. It works by changing the cell membrane of the fungus, causing it to lose nutrients.
Common Brand Names
-
Topical miconazole nitrate is available in the United States under a number of brand names. As of 2010, these include Lotrimin AF, Monistat 1, Monistat Derm, Neosorin AF, Micatin, Mitrazol and Desenex.
Considerations
-
Miconazole nitrate creams are oil and water formulations. They may feel less greasy than an ointment formulation, but according to a review of topical antifungals by Provider Synergies and published on the Oregon state website, creams are also less effective than ointments.
Side Effects and Precautions
-
Although miconazole nitrate cream is generally well-tolerated, you may experience side effects such as redness, burning, rash or other skin irritation. If this happens, consult your doctor immediately. Also be careful not to get miconazole nitrate in or near your eyes.
Storage
-
Miconazole nitrate cream should be stored in its original container at room temperature and away from direct light. Keep the lid tightly closed and do not freeze. Be sure to discard this medication when it has reached its expiration date. As with all medications, keep miconazole nitrate cream out of the reach of children.
