What to Do for Reaction to Ambien

Ambien is a prescription medication used to treat insomnia. Ambien, like all drugs, has side effects and may cause adverse reactions. It is important to be able to differentiate between Ambien's common side effects and adverse reactions. While certain side effects are expected when taking Ambien, people taking Ambien are not expected to experience adverse reactions.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Consult your physician if any of the following side effects begin to occur regularly after taking Ambien:

      Headache
      Nausea or vomiting
      Dizziness
      Muscle pain
      Lack of coordination
      Weakness
      Diarrhea or constipation
      Dry mouth
      Blurred vision
      Forgetfulness
      Impaired judgment

The above are common after taking Ambien. If any of these side effects, however, begin to occur on a regular basis, a physician may need to lower the dosage or halt the use of Ambien.

    Adverse Reactions to Ambien

    • Contact a physician immediately if any of the following reactions occur after taking Ambien:

      Depression
      Suicidal thoughts
      Delusions and/or hallucinations
      Aggressive behavior
      Confusion
      Mania
      Poor coordination
      Loss of consciousness
      Heart palpitations
      Slurred speech
      Impotence
      Hypertension

The above reactions are uncommon to Ambien, and a physician is likely to discontinue the use of Ambien.

    Severe Side Effects of Ambien

    • Discontinue Ambien immediately if any of the following the side effects occur:

      Trouble breathing
Swelling of throat, face, tongue or lips
      Hives

The above symptoms suggest an allergic reaction and Ambien should be discontinued immediately. Immediate medical attention is needed.
