  1. Cipramil Definition

    • Cipramil belongs to the SSRI group of antidepressant medications. It treats depression, dementia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and diabetes related neuropathy.

    Extrapyramidal Definition

    • The body's extrapyramidal system controls motion, muscles, and stability. Certain medications, namely antipsychotics and antidepressants, can cause side effects that impact the extrapyramidal system.

    Extrapyramidal Side Effects

    • Cipramil may cause akathasia, an extrapyramidal side effect characterized by severe restlessness accompanied by a movement such as rocking. Dyskinesia, or twitching, may also occur.

      Neuroleptic malignant syndrome causes severe muscle stiffness, fever, and may cause death.

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, less than 1 percent of patients using Cipramil experience extrapyramidal side effects.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for extrapyramidal side effects involves cessation of the medication and possible prescription of other medications to lessen the symptoms.
