Effect of Viagra on a Woman
Because Viagra (sildenafil) is effective for treating erectile dysfunction, women may be curious about how it might affect their libido. A primary concern for women interested in experimenting with Viagra is that research is scarce, so effects are not well-documented.-
Function
-
Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis. Some researchers believe the drug may have a similar physical effect in women as it does in men, according to Health Services at Columbia University, and Viagra may increase blood flow to the clitoris.
Expert Insight
-
People taking certain anti-depressant medications often report a low sex drive and problems achieving orgasm. A study published in the July 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found women taking Viagra in addition to anti-depressants experienced significantly improved orgasm function but no increase in sexual desire.
Side Effects
-
Women in the JAMA study frequently reported side effects of headache, flushing and indigestion. These effects are also common in men. Other relatively common side effects in men using Viagra include nasal congestion, urinary tract infections and vision problems.
Warning
-
Because research is scant, effects of Viagra on women have not been fully determined. Women may experience different side effects from men or different frequency of certain effects.
Considerations
-
Manufacturer Pfizer Inc. has stated it does not plan to develop the drug for women's sexual disorders and Viagra effectiveness in women is limited, according to an article published in the July 23, 2008, issue of the Los Angeles Times.
