Liquid Zyrtec Side Effects

Liquid Zyrtec is an antihistamine medication that is used to reduce the natural amount of histamine found in the body. Histamine is the primary cause of a range of symptoms, including itching, sneezing, congestion, watering eyes, and a host of other allergy and cold-like symptoms. Zyrtec provides users with relief from these symptoms and like most other medicines on the market, has a range of potential side effects.

  1. Moderate Side Effects

    • Users of liquid Zyrtec might experience some very mild side effects from ingesting the medication, including marked drowsiness, stomach pain (which occurs mostly in children), fatigue, trouble sleeping or excitability (again, occurring mostly in children), and dry mouth (also known as cotton mouth). These symptoms generally resolve themselves and aren't particularly harmful to the patient.

      Also, users should avoid drinking alcohol, as it can increase the effects of the medication significantly. Do not take this medication if you have to drive or operate heavy machinery immediately after taking it, as Zyrtec can affect your ability to think clearly as well as your judgment. Moreover, if you are taking other medications that cause drowsiness (like sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, allergy medication, or narcotic pain relievers), alert your doctor as the Zyrtec might add to the drowsy effects.

    Severe Side Effects

    • There are another set of side effects that can affect Zyrtec users that are much more serious and require the attention of a medical professional. These side effects include irregular heartbeat, serious allergic reactions (consisting of itching, hives, rash, swelling in the throat, mouth, face or lips), bleeding or bruising, seizures, extreme fatigue, or yellowing of the eyes and/or skin.

    What To Do

    • While some of the side effects of Zyrtec may be common, you should never feel as though you have to suffer through the effects of medication. If you are feeling uncomfortable, contact your doctor and ask about lowering the dosage or prescribing a suitable alternative. If you have any of the more severe side effects after taking liquid Zyrtec, call your doctor immediately and cease further doses of the medication.
