Tenuate is a drug available by prescription only. Tenuate is classified as a sympathomimetic amine, similar to an amphetamine. Tenuate is prescribed as a short-term supplement for the treatment of obesity.
  1. Function

    • Tenuate works to stimulate the central nervous system. It causes your heart rate and blood pressure to increase and makes your appetite decrease.

    Administration

    • Tenuate is taken three times a day, one hour before meals; the sustained-release form is taken once a day in mid-morning. Tenuate is only prescribed for use for a period of several weeks at a time due to the possibility of serious side effects with longer usage.

    • Tenuate helps patients lose weight. It is used along with a physician-approved, reduced-calorie diet, an exercise plan and a behavior change program.

    Effects

    • Common side effects associated with Tenuate are restlessness, tremors, nervousness, anxiety, dizziness, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, impotence or a change in your sex drive.

    Warning

    • Tenuate can cause dependence if it is used regularly for extended time periods or in high doses. To prevent withdrawal when stopping treatment, gradually reduce your dose as directed by your doctor.
