What Can You Do for the Itching That Dexedrine Causes?
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder is a phenomenon getting increasing attention in our education and health-care systems. While teachers and parents are learning about how to support kids with ADHD, pharmaceutical companies have developed a number of drugs successful in curbing the effects of the condition. Dexedrine is a popular ADHD medication with some not-so-popular side effects. Let's talk about the itching.-
Dexedrine
-
Dexedrine is a prescription-strength stimulant. For those with ADHD, Dexedrine can actually create calmness and allow them to focus better. But Dexedrine is a member of the amphetamine family and like most drugs in its class, comes with the risk and potential for addiction. Dexedrine must be used as directed, and a user of this medication should be watched for any desire to increase dosage.
Typical Itching
-
When beginning use of Dexedrine, people sometimes experience the feeling of itchiness. There's really not a lot that can be done about this except to hang on. As one's body begins to adjust to the medication, the itching usually wears off.
Don't use topical medications like Benedryl cream, Caladryl or cortisone. They won't make a difference. Don't take any oral medications either. And don't injure yourself scratching.
The best thing is to talk to your prescribing doctor, who may make changes to your dosage or type of medication.
Allergic Reactions
-
Not all itching is the same. If you're seeing signs of rash, discoloration or swelling accompanied by itching, it's more likely an allergic reaction. This can happen with any medication and it certainly happens to some people who start Dexedrine.
If you have any of these symptoms, immediately notify your physician. If the reaction is severe enough, go to an urgent-care center or emergency room. In simpler situations, your doctor may put you on an antihistamine--topical, oral or both to control the allergic reaction. And in most cases, allergic reactions mean you're not a good candidate for Dexedrine and it's time to talk with your doctor about alternatives.
