Seroquel Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
-
Features
-
NMS is a potentially fatal syndrome that can cause high fever, muscle rigidity, kidney failure, muscle breakdown, and altered mental status. NMS can cause instability in cardiac functions, with an irregular pulse or blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, rapid pulse, and profuse sweating.
Identification
-
According to AstraZeneca, it can be difficult to diagnose NMS. The doctor will have to rule out serious medical conditions such as pneumonia, as well as other drug side effects that can cause muscle problems.
Significance
-
It's important to stop taking Seroquel right away if you suspect NMS. You'll also be admitted to the hospital, so the doctor can treat serious symptoms with appropriate medications and monitoring.
Considerations
-
Once you've recovered from NMS, the doctor will discuss your need for further drug therapy. Once you've had NMS, you're at risk for developing the syndrome again if you take one of the anti-psychotic drugs associated with the disorder.
Tip
-
When you begin taking Seroquel or other anti-psychotic drugs, it's important to let your doctor know if you develop any symptoms of NMS or just don't feel right.
