Purpose of Yohimbe

Yohimbe is a natural alternative to prescription drugs such as Viagra and Levitra for treating erectile dysfunction or sexual libido problems. As with all drugs, it is important to pay attention to the dosage instructions and other health conditions before taking yohimbe.
  1. Dosage

    • In adults, the U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends four dosages of yohimbine hydrochloride depending on the medical condition. For erectile dysfunction people take 15 to 42 milligrams per day, for female libido up to 15 milligrams, for dry mouth up to 18 milligrams and for side effects from antidepressant medications 5 to 12 milligrams.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of yohimbe may include flushing of the skin, problems with urinating, increased heart rate, headache, nervousness, tremors, dizziness, seizures, paralysis, low blood pressure or insomnia.

    Types

    • If you are taking yohimbe, you should know that there are other forms. Yohimbe, yohimbine and yohimbine hydrochloride are close in chemical structure but not identical. Yohimbine is the actual chemical in the bark, and yohimbine hydrochloride is the stand-alone form in drugs. The name yohimbe commonly refers to the raw form from the tree.

    Features

    • African tribes typically used yohimbe bark as a sex stimulant. The bark can also be dried and consumed in the form of a drink. Yohimbine hydrochloride (yohimbine HCL) medications are often prescribed to treat male erectile dysfunction and low sexual desire in women.

    Warning

    • Children should not use any form of yohimbe. People should consult their doctor if they are taking medications for high blood pressure or mental conditions such as depression or schizophrenia.
