Pros for Anti Aging Medications
-
Increased Bone Density
-
As people age, they lose bone density. This often leads to the elderly population experiencing an influx of broken bones and fractures when they fall. The Mayo Clinic states that one way to prevent the onset of osteoporosis is to take medications called bisphosphonates. These bone density medications include brands such as Boniva, Actonel and Fosamax. These medications are prescribed when a person is diagnosed with osteoporosis and once an individual is in the early stages of developing osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates prevent loss of bone density at an accelerated rate.
Inhibit Wrinkles
-
"Marie Claire Magazine" states clinical research has shown that prescription retinoid, such as Renova and Retin-A, speeds up cell turnover, flattens wrinkles, makes sunspots lighter and builds collagen. However, for retinoid creams and any other products containing retinoids to be effective, it is essential that the person using them use the proper dosage. While slight redness and tingling of the skin may occur when using products containing retinoid, an intense adverse reaction is not normal. Users must keep in mind that it takes a few weeks for the skin to get used to this anti-aging compound; however, once the skin adapts, medications containing retinoids are successful in preventing wrinkles.
Prevent Memory Loss
-
The Mayo Clinic reports that Huperzine, a species of Chinese club moss, is a promising treatment for Alzheimer's disease. This supplement works as a cholinesterase inhibitor, which improves the amount of neurotransmitters in the brain. Previous studies suggest that luperzine A, may help sharpen memory and provide added protection of nerve cells. Both of these factors contribute to slower deterioration of cognitive functioning -- which is a key factor associated with Alzheimer's disease. However, the Mayo Clinic states that more studies need to be performed to determine if there are any long-term side effects of this anti-aging supplement.
Keep Libido Intact
-
As men age, their testosterone levels decrease. Testosterone plays a vital role in a man's sex drive. Mayo Clinic states many men experience a difference in arousal between the ages of 60 to 65. One of the telltale signs of lower testosterone is that it takes him longer to achieve an erection. He may also notice his erections are not as firm as they used to be. It may also take him longer to reach full arousal and achieve an orgasm. During this time is when erectile dysfunctions take form. Medications such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis help men achieve firmer erections so they can participate in sexual activity with their partners.
As women age, their bodies produce less estrogen. While women have lower testosterone levels than men do, the amount that influences sex drive also decreases with age. This change in testosterone levels interferes with a woman's libido. She may not be able to get aroused or provide enough lubrication for sexual activity. One form of medication women take when they have problems with sexual arousal is testosterone therapy. The Mayo Clinic states this medication comes in gel, cream, patch and pill form. Users, however, should be aware that, while this therapy may be effective, the FDA has not yet approved it to be used by women.
