Sinus Fungal Remedies
Sinusitis, or sinus infections, refers to an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages which can be broken down into three types: viral, bacterial and fungal. A fungal sinus infection, a rare condition which can cause considerable nasal and sinus inflammation, usually occurs in individuals who are allergic to fungi and have compromised immune systems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports this condition is usually chronic, lasting longer than eight weeks, and recurring.-

The American Rhinologic Society (ARS) indicates there are four types of fungal sinusitis: fungal ball, allergic sinusitis, and chronic and acute invasive sinusitis. Of these four, fungal ball and allergic sinusitis are noninvasive, while chronic and acute sinusitis are invasive. Fungal sinusitis usually has the same signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis which is unresponsive to antibiotic therapy and is difficult to treat. Allergy testing, desensitization or surgery may be recommended as the most effective treatments for this condition.
Noninvasive
-
A fungal ball does not cause significant inflammation, but the condition does bring about sinus discomfort, blockage and discharge. Allergic fungal sinusitis is an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction to environmental fungi and may cause nasal block, discharge and polyps which produce chronic inflammation. Treatment for allergic fungal sinusitis includes antihistamines, antibioics, anti-fungal medications, irrigations, and surgery. A minimally invasive surgical procedure is necessary to remove the fungal ball, polyps and debris. Per ARS, the vast majority of patients who undergo this surgery are very satisified with the results.
Invasive
-
Chronic invasive sinusitis occurs when a fungi infects an individual who has a normal immune system. This disorder advances slowly and can eventually lead to chronic headaches and facial swelling. Acute invasive sinusitis affects patients with a compromised immune system. This is a serious, often fatal, condition which needs to be treated immediately. These two conditions require surgery, including intravenous or oral antifungal drugs and treatment of the compromised immune system. The vast majority of patients who undergo surgery have fewer symptoms and enjoy a better quality of life.
Homeopathic Remedies
-
Certain herbs and plants may help trigger the body's natural response in treating fungal sinusitis. Calcarea carbonica can alleviate feverish conditions, nux vomica can help control nausea brought on by post-nasal drip, and nitricum acidum can bring relief to an individual whose nasal airways are completely blocked causing head pain. These remedies may be used in conjunction with prescribed medications. It is recommended, however, that a medical professional be informed of the use of alternative remedies in treating fungal sinusitis.
