When can you get marfan syndrome?
Marfan syndrome is usually inherited from a parent who carries the faulty gene. In a small number of cases, it occurs as a new genetic mutation. That means the child inherits two normal copies of the gene and then there is a spontaneous change in the gene. When this occurs, it is called a "de novo" mutation. Approximately 25% of people with Marfan syndrome have a de novo mutation.Marfan syndrome can be diagnosed at any age. However, it is often diagnosed in childhood or adolescence when the signs and symptoms are most noticeable. Doctors diagnose Marfan syndrome based on a person's physical characteristics and family history.
