What is a low grade PUJ obstruction?
Low-grade pelviureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction is a condition where the flow of urine from the kidney to the bladder is partially blocked. This can cause the kidney to become enlarged, and can lead to pain and/or infection.
The most common cause of low-grade PUJ obstruction is a narrowing of the PUJ, which is the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder. This narrowing can be caused by a number of factors, including:
* Congenital abnormalities: Some people are born with a narrow PUJ.
* Kidney stones: Kidney stones can block the PUJ, causing urine to back up.
* Scar tissue: Scar tissue from surgery or injury can also block the PUJ.
Low-grade PUJ obstruction can be treated with a variety of methods, including:
* Conservative management: This involves monitoring the condition and treating any symptoms that develop.
* Surgery: Surgery may be necessary to widen the PUJ and allow urine to flow more freely.
* Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL): This is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small incision is made in the back and a laser is used to break up and remove kidney stones.
* Endopyelotomy: This is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small incision is made in the PUJ and a stent is inserted to widen the tube.
The best treatment option for low-grade PUJ obstruction will depend on the individual patient's condition.
