How to Cure Extreme Body Odor

Everyone has body odor from time to time, especially when you exercise, the weather is warm, or you are experiencing stress. There are steps you can take, however, to get rid of body odor. In some cases, your body odor can be extreme or come on unexpectedly. This is when seeing a doctor becomes important, because you may have a metabolic condition or other disease that is causing your body odor.

  1. How to Cure Extreme Body Odor

    • 1

Use an over-the-counter antiperspirant and deodorant. Antiperspirants work by blocking the pores that cause you to sweat, so you'll experience less perspiration. Deodorant works by eliminating the odor. They cannot, however, stop perspiration. If over-the-counter antiperspirants don't work, your doctor may prescribe a stronger prescription version that may do the trick.

    • 2

Bathe daily. Sometimes it may help to bathe twice a day, especially during the hot summer months or after you exercise. Using an antibacterial soap when you bathe can help decrease body odor.

    • 3

Wear the right clothing. This may include cotton, wool, and silk because they allow your body to breathe, reduce perspiration, and body odor. Look for the same types of materials for clothes that you workout in to reduce sweating and body odor.

    • 4

Relax. Sometimes sweating and body odor comes from stressful conditions. Try relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, journaling, knitting -- basically anything that helps you relax -- to help reduce excessive sweating and perspiration.

    • 5

Change your diet. Foods with strong odors often come out in our pores. This includes anything with lots of garlic and onions, or any other spicy flavors. Try identifying what affects you and eliminating it from your diet.

    • 6

See your doctor. Sometimes extreme body odor can be a symptom of a more serious condition. For example, according to the National Institutes of Health, trimethylaminuria is a metabolic condition that emits a fishy smell from your pores and from your breath.
