What should you do if have a rash that are like little red bubbles on your skin?
Chickenpox (varicella-zoster virus)
SYMPTOMS
* Rash of itchy, fluid-filled blisters that appear first on the trunk, then spread to the face, scalp, arms, and legs
* Mild fever
* Fatigue
* Headache
* Loss of appetite
TREATMENT
* There is no specific treatment for chickenpox; however, the symptoms can be relieved by:
- Taking an oral antihistamine to reduce itching
- Applying calamine lotion to the rash
- Taking a cool bath or shower
- Drinking plenty of fluids
- Getting plenty of rest
- Avoiding contact with others
PREVENTION
* The chickenpox vaccine is very effective in preventing chickenpox. It is recommended for all children and adults who have not had chickenpox.
* If you have been exposed to chickenpox, you may be able to prevent the disease by getting the vaccine within 72 hours of exposure.
WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR
* If you have a rash that is blistering and you are not sure what it is, call your doctor.
* You should also call your doctor if you have chickenpox and you develop any of the following complications:
- Fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Vomiting
- Seizures
