What is enfezema?
Emphysema is a progressive, irreversible disease that affects the lungs. It's caused by damage to the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs in the lungs that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through them.
When the alveoli are damaged, they become less elastic and can't hold as much air. This makes breathing difficult and can cause low blood oxygen levels. Emphysema is a serious disease and can be life-threatening.
Symptoms of emphysema include:
* Shortness of breath
* Wheezing
* Coughing
* Chest tightness
* Fatigue
* Weight loss
* Blue tint to the skin or lips
There are a number of risk factors for emphysema, including:
* Smoking
* Exposure to secondhand smoke
* Air pollution
* Occupational exposure to dust and fumes
* Age
* Family history of emphysema
Treatment for emphysema includes:
* Medications to relieve symptoms
* Oxygen therapy
* Pulmonary rehabilitation
* Surgery in some cases
Emphysema is a serious disease but it can be managed. Early diagnosis and treatment can help to slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life.
