What is the cause of tetanus?
Tetanus is caused by a bacterial infection.
The bacterium that causes tetanus is called Clostridium tetani. This bacterium is found in soil, dust, and manure. It can enter the body through a cut or wound, and produces toxins that affect the nervous system. These toxins cause muscle spasms, which can be severe and even fatal.
