How tetanus is transmitted?
Tetanus is caused by a bacterium called Clostridium tetani. These bacteria are found in soil, dust, and manure. Tetanus is not spread from person to person.
*Puncture wounds:* Tetanus is most commonly transmitted through deep puncture wounds, such as those caused by nails, splinters, or animal bites.
*Burns:* Tetanus can also be transmitted through burns, especially if the burn is deep or contaminated with soil or manure.
*Surgical wounds:* Tetanus can rarely be transmitted through surgical wounds, especially if the surgery is performed in an unsanitary environment.
It enters the body through these wounds and produces toxins that affect the nervous system, causing tetanus.
The bacteria produce toxins that travel along the nerves to the spinal cord and brain. These toxins block the signals between the nerves and the muscles, which causes the muscles to contract uncontrollably.
