How polio is spread?
Polio is caused by the poliovirus. The poliovirus lives in the throat and intestines of an infected person. The virus can spread from person to person through contact with the infected person's feces or saliva. This can happen when an infected person:
* Doesn't wash their hands after using the bathroom
* Changes a diaper
* Prepares food or drinks for someone else
* Coughs or sneezes on someone
The poliovirus can also spread through contact with contaminated water or food. This is more common in areas where sanitation is poor and people do not have access to clean drinking water.
Polio is a very contagious disease. However, it can be prevented by getting vaccinated. The polio vaccine is one of the most effective vaccines available and has led to a dramatic decrease in the number of cases of polio worldwide.
