How to Stop Gadolinium Body Itch

Gadolinium is a chemical used by doctors during the MRI process. It is inserted into the patient's veins in order for the doctor to easily view organs in the patient's body and note any abnormalities. The disadvantages to gadolinium are that it commonly causes unwanted side effects like headaches, dizziness, and a rash. There are a few simple ways you can treat a skin rash caused by gadolinium, and many of them use common household ingredients that are found in your bathroom or kitchen cabinet.

    • 1

Swallow some anti-histamine pills to see if the itching goes away. One or two pills will suffice. Sometimes a rash forms as the body's way of fighting an allergy, and anti-histamine pills will stop the histamine production in your body to reduce or eliminate itch.

    • 2

Rub some anti-itch cream, numbing cream, or calamine lotion over the itchy rash. The lotion will help sooth and numb the itch until it goes away. Resist the urge to scratch the rash as it may worsen the problem.

    • 3

Massage some oil on the itchy rash if you don't have any medicated cream. Baby oil and raw coconut oil are good choices to sooth the itch and help the rash go away. Anything containing eucalyptus or aloe works well on rashes.

    • 4

Lay an ice pack over the itchy area until it is numb. Coldness is sometimes enough to make the rash go away and stop histamine production. Don't let the area get too cold, however, as you can cause the skin to die.

    • 5

Wait until the gadolinium leaves your system. It should only take a few days to detox completely from the chemical, and when it's gone, your rash should disappear with or without treatment.
