- Over-the-counter antifungal medication (i.e., Tinactin, Lamisil)
- Shampoo that contains selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione (i.e., Selsun Blue, Head and Shoulders)
- Warm water
- Breathable gauze pads
- Towel

Treating Ringworm of the Skin

Wash hands and body with warm water and soap. Dry off skin completely with a towel.

Shake can of antifungal spray thoroughly before use.

Hold can about six inches from the infected area. Spray a thin layer on the infection and slightly around the infection, as well. Apply the medication twice each day, once in the morning and at night for the length of time prescribed on the medication box. Do not miss a dose. The infection will likely go away after four weeks. If not, stop treatment and return to the doctor.
Treating Ringworm of the Nails and Scalp

See doctor if you have any nail discoloration. A diagnosis of ringworm will best be treated with a prescription for a anti-fungal tablet or topical ointment such as Lamisil or Trosyl. Take prescription as directed by doctor.

See doctor if you have any symptoms of ringworm on the scalp. Ringworm will be treated with antifungal medications and oral steriods for inflammation, if necessary. Griseofulvin is the first line of antifungals prescribed for a total of six to eight weeks.Take all medication as prescribed by doctor.

Treat scalp infection at home by washing entire scalp with warm water and a shampoo that contains selenium sulfide (2.5 percent) or zinc pyrithione (1 to 2 percent). Follow instructions on shampoo bottle. Rinse hair and scalp with water and dry with towel. Repeat two to three times per week.
