Red Bumps in Children

Red bumps are common ailments in children. Most have a relatively minor cause and can often be treated at home. Persistent rashes with a high fever are best treated by a doctor.
  1. Spider and Insect Bites

    • Spider bites are usually small- to medium-sized red bumps and usually appear in sets of three. Other insect bites may be more or less in number and spread over the body.

    Childhood Diseases

    • Fifth disease, chicken pox, measles and the mumps all cause red bumps in children. Each has a characteristic form your doctor can easily identify.

    Hives

    • Hives are an allergic reaction to chemical or food. Hives appear suddenly and should be treated by a doctor.

    Viral skin rash

    • A viral infection of the skin may cause widespread red bumps and should be treated by a doctor.

    Contact dermatitis

    • Contact dermatitis is a rash whose origin is unknown in many cases. The bumps are caused by irritation from chemicals, fabric types, or plants, but is not considered serious.
