Skin Rash in Children Information

Skin rashes are generally not dangerous, but all rashes in children should be examined by a pediatrician, especially if they are accompanied by fever, or don't respond to home care. Many childhood illnesses are caused by viruses and bacteria, and the accompanying rash can often be an identifying symptom.
  1. Allergies

    • Allergies are a common cause of skin rashes in children, and are triggered by allergens that come in contact with the child's skin or are inhaled.

    Common Rashes

    • Childhood eczema is an itchy irritating rash that affects about 10 percent of all children in the United States. Diaper rash and heat rash are other examples of rashes in children that are irritating but not dangerous.

    Viral Infections

    • Many childhood diseases are caused by viruses, such as chickenpox, measles and rubella, which may be accompanied by skin rashes.

    Bacterial Infections

    • Impetigo is the most common rash caused by bacteria, and it is more common in children than adults. Other skin conditions caused by bacteria include scarlet fever, folliculitis and boils.

    Other Causes

    • Parasites and fungi may cause skin problems in children, and insect bites, particularly tick bites, can result in rashes and serious illnesses such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
