Medication for Jock Itch

The groin area is dark, warm and humid. Unfortunately, these conditions can foster fungus growth and one of the most common is jock itch, which goes by the medical name tinea cruris. According to the Mayo Clinic, jock itch is a fungus that can affect the skin on the genitals, inner thighs and buttocks. People who experience jock itch normally have a ring-shaped rash covering the infected areas. There are various anti-fungal medications and over-the-counter powders, sprays and ointments available to combat the condition.

  1. Lamisil

    • One of the most popular medications used to alleviate jock itch is Lamisil. This medication is not only great for fighting jock itch, but can also be used to fight other fungi such as ringworm or athlete's foot. When using Lamisil, do not use any bandages over the affected area and it is best to wear loose clothing so that air can circulate and keep the area dry.

    Ting

    • Individuals who prefer sprays can find comfort for their jock itch with Ting. Ting is an anti-fungal product that comes in a spray or a powder. Ting can be used to kill the fungus, stop the itching and start the healing process.

    Powders

    • Powders can also be used to soothe the itching and discomfort associated with jock itch. Two excellent powders that can be used on the sensitive groin area are Gold Bond Medicated Powder and Monistat Soothing Care Medicated Powder. Some of the symptoms of jock itch include burning, itching, chafing, scaling and just general discomfort around the infected area.     Other Treatments

    • In addition to taking medication, when you have jock itch you need to keep the area dry. The area where the jock itch is occurring should be exposed to air so that the rash can be relieved. Keeping the area dry and clean can also help heal the infection and prevent it from recurring.

    Oral Medications

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, three prominent oral medications used for jock itch are Sporanox, Diflucan and Lamisil. However, individuals should be aware that oral medications could cause side effects such as abnormal liver function or gastrointestinal problems. Although jock itch can be embarrassing, a person with the condition should take steps to alleviate it. Ignoring the problem will just make the discomfort and rash worse.
