Natural Skin Care for Rosacea
Over 14 million Americans have been diagnosed with a skin disease called Rosacea. To treat this disease, dermatologists usually prescribe a topical medication containing sulfur or azelaic acid. A cardiovascular medication is sometimes prescribed to control flushing that is related to the disease. Aside from going to your doctor for a treatment, many at-home remedies are available.-
The Symptoms
-
Rosacea occurs when tiny blood vessels move below your skin's surface. This causes blotchy red patches to form and it makes you look as though your face is blushing. Along with redness, you will often see the appearance of small vessels on your skin along with bumps and pus-filled pimples. You may even notice the appearance of raised red patches called plaques. Edema, or facial swelling, may also accompany Rosacea. This skin ailment can also affect your chest, neck, scalp, ears and cheeks.
Licorice Root Extract
-
Licorice has a main component called glycyrrhizinate which is both an inflammatory and a moisturizer. Products that contain licorice root can lighten your skin. Try searching your local health food store for products where licorice root is at the top of the list of ingredients on the package. You can also make a facial mask of licorice powder and aloe vera gel.
Chamomile
-
Chamomile can minimize inflammation and other symptoms related to Rosacea. Take a few chamomile tea bags and pour them in a pan with boiling water. Freeze this liquid and use it as a cold compress on the affected area.
Pine Tar Soap
-
Make a thick lather of pine tar soap and cover the affected area to minimize redness. Leave this on overnight and rinse with cold water the next morning.
Treat Your Skin, Naturally
-
When treating Rosacea, never use products which contain alcohol, witch hazel, menthol, eucalyptus, peppermint, clove oil and salicylic acid as these will irritate your skin. Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser that does not exfoliate, or buff, your skin and use a soft towel afterward to pat dry. Try a moisturizer with jojoba oil, which won't clog your pores. Oils such as jojoba or safflower can be found in health food stores. Safflower Oil helps your skin with healing and helps to normalize the production of prostaglandins, or anti-inflammatory substances, in your skin.
