Treatments for Recurring Hives
Hives, also known as urticaria, can flare up anywhere on our bodies. They vary in shape and size, but their symptom of intense itching is consistent. Hives tend to disappear and reappear over various parts of the body. Outbreaks will usually last from a few minutes to a couple of days. Allergic reactions commonly cause the onset of hives. Other triggers include medications, insect bites, stress and excessive sun exposure.-
Antihistamines
-
Antihistamines are a common medication used to treat hives. They can be purchased over the counter or obtained with a doctor's prescription. Over the counter antihistamines such as Benadryl and Chlortrimeton come in liquid or pill form. Prescription antihistamines like Atarax and Allegra are sometime used in conjunction with other medications to treat hives. Antihistamines can cause drowsiness, and should be used with caution during the day.
Oral Steroids
-
Steroids such as prednisone are used to treat severe cases of hives. These medications help to reduce inflammation. The downside is steroids can only be used safely for a short period of time. Topical steroids can also be used to treat inflammation and calm itching.
Home Remedies
-
Continuously placing cool compresses to the affected areas provides relief from itching. You can apply milk of magnesia on hives to control itching. It has alkaline properties which provide soothing relief. Prepare yourself a bath with ½ cup cornstarch, and ½ cup baking soda to soak in at least twice a day. This preparation also helps reduce inflammation and discomfort. Since stress is also a causative factor of hives, herbal tea can be beneficial for relief. Chamomile, valerian or peppermint tea can be consumed to help calm nerves and provide relaxation. Calamine lotion applied topically to the affected area can provide relief. You can also rub vitamin E oil or Aloe Vera gel on hives twice a day to reduce the length of outbreak.
