Jock Itch Symptoms & Treatment

Jock itch is the result of a fungal infection. It affects many people, not just athletes, and it can be passed from person to person. While you need medication in order to clear up jock itch once you're infected, the best cure is simple prevention, which takes just a little care and forethought.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of jock itch include itching and redness in your groin, thighs and buttocks. You also may experience a burning sensation. Your skin will peel and flake in these areas.

    Who Gets Jock Itch?

    • Jock itch is not just for athletes--anyone who sweats can get it.

When You Should See a Doctor

    • You should see your doctor whenever you have a rash that is swollen or spreads, or one that does not clear up in a few days.

    Treatment

    • Since jock itch is caused by a fungal infection, you need an antifungal to get rid of it. Your doctor may suggest trying an over-the-counter medication first, such as allylamines like Lamisil and Nafin, and azoles like Micatin and Lotrimin.

If your jock itch is severe or does not respond to over-the-counter medication, you may need a prescription medication.

    Prevention

    • To prevent jock itch, bathe daily, stay dry, change your underwear at least daily, and wear clothing that is loose-fitting.
