Grapefruit Cure for Nail Fungus
Nail fungus is an unsightly, stubborn and fairly common problem. Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, can be caused by nail biting, old nail polish, damp socks or the use of public showers. Grapefruit extract or citrus paradisi is used as a homeopathic remedy for a number of ailments including nail fungus. Although homeopathic treatments are often frowned upon by traditional medical practitioners, many people swear by their effectiveness. Prescription treatments for nail fungus can be damaging to the liver, which leaves many people looking towards more natural (and safe) methods of treating nail fungus.-
Identifying Nail Fungus
-
Nail fungus can be identified by brittle, flaky and discolored nails. In advanced stages, the nail can begin to smell and cause pain while walking. Nail fungus should be treated as soon as possible and may require prescription medication if fungus has grown into advanced stages. Consult with a physician to rule out conditions with similar symptoms, such as nail psoriasis, dermatitis or trauma.
Acquiring Grapefruit Seed Extract
-
Grapefruit seed extract can be purchased in liquid form from most health food or vitamin stores. If you have problems finding the extract locally, there are several websites that sell the liquid form. To prepare it at home, you can grind the seeds and juiceless pulp of grapefruits and mix the extract with glycerin.
Treating the Fungus
-
In order to treat the fungus, mix one part of extract with ten parts water or glycerin. Apply the mixture directly to the cuticle of the nail, surface of the nail and underneath the front part of the nail. After applying the mixture, gently scrub the nail with a small soft brush. Apply twice a day for as long as you like or until the fungus clears up. Nail fungus is particularly persistent and may take as long as several months to heal.
Preventing Nail Fungus
-
Wear clean socks and comfortable shoes that allow nails and feet to breathe. Use anti-fungal foot powder. Never shower in public showers barefoot. Wear a pair of plastic thong sandals. Keep your nails trimmed at the end of the fingertips or toes. Bring your own tools when getting manicures and pedicures and disinfect them regularly.
