Pain Relief From Mouth Thrush
Mouth thrush, also known as oral thrush, Candidiasis or Moniliasis, is caused by a yeast infection in the mouth that penetrates the membranes in the mouth. While everyone has some amount of Candida, triggers such as taking antibiotics, undergoing chemotherapy or having immunotherapy infections such as AIDS may cause mouth thrush. This painful rash can cause pain and a burning sensation in the mouth, requiring treatment.-
Over-the-Counter Treatments
-
Patients who are experiencing mouth thrush as the result of taking antibiotics may be able to counteract these effects by eating unflavored yogurt or taking acidophilus pills or liquid medication that can restore bacteria in the body. If the thrush symptoms are so painful that brushing the teeth is impossible, rinsing the mouth with a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution may help.
Prescription Medications
-
For adults with weakened immune systems, a physician may prescribe medications that can destroy the fungus. These antifungal medications may come in pill, lozenge or liquid (which can be especially useful if the infection makes it difficult to swallow) forms. Those with liver damage may not be able to take antifungal medications as they can slow liver function. These medications may be taken from 10 to 14 days to clear the infection. Common names include nystatin, amphotericin and miconazole. If these medications prove ineffective, injections containing antifungal medications may be used to clear the infection.
